Green Building and Sustainable Development

About this course

This is a public science and technology course, which introduces the basic concept of green/sustainable building, the history, the state of the art of green building development in China and in the world, and the latest achievements in green building evaluation system, standards, policies and regulations in several countries. Through the analysis of the relationship between green building and technology, it is clarified that green building is the optimized integration of technologies which adapt to the climate and resources of the region, rather than a pile of so-called high-tech and expensive products. Through the analysis and comparison of the social and cultural, regional conditions, resource and climate in different countries, help the students to understand the similarities and differences of roads of green building development in different countries and the underlying reasons. Hence, China, as a developing country, should follow a unique path for green building development adapt to our national conditions. Finally, several green building cases in China and other countries are introduced, showing the successful technical strategies and practical results of green building under different climatic and resource conditions.

Learning objectives

Enable students to understand:

1. The concept, development history, latest achievements and appropriate technologies of green building, and the significance of green building for sustainable development.
2. The similarities and differences of green building development in different countries and the underlying reasons, as well as the reasons why China should follow a green building development path adapt to China’s national conditions.
